Do You Really Need To Train Your Dog?

2016/5/4 10:06:15

Dogs are normally a very sociable animal. Sometimes they can get carried away by playing a bit too rough and this can sometimes be mistaken for aggression. It is important that you control this behaviour so no accidents happen.

In order to control behaviour that can become out of control it is important to start training as soon as you bring home that cute new puppy. For example when a young puppy nibbles on your fingers most people tend to think that is cute. When that cute puppy grows into a 80 pound dog that nibbling will not be so cute.

It is very important that your puppy knows things like what they can chew on and what they can't. He also needs to learn where he can go to relieve himself, how to properly walk on a leash etc. If taught at a young age you will avoid a lot of bad habits.

Training your new puppy can be a lot of fun or it can be a big chore. How you approach it will make the world of difference, especially for your puppy. Training used to involve reward and punishment, now most training is through positive reinforcement. When your puppy does the right behaviour he is rewarded with praise, treats or both. You really need to show a lot of enthusiasm when you are rewarding your puppy. The more enthusiastic you are the more your puppy will thrive.

When using positive reinforcements, your puppy will soon learn what behaviour will win him your praise or possibly a treat. Most puppies and dogs love treats so that is why treats are often used when training as they are a good motivator.

What do you do when your puppy does not obey a command when you give him one? The last thing you want to do is punish your puppy for not obeying. If he is not obeying all the time it just means that you need to work harder because he is not 100 percent sure of the command yet. For example if you want him to sit don't push him into a sit, instead take a treat and hold it over his head and go back with it. As he stares up at the treat he will most times end up in a sit position. Praise him and give him the treat.

If you do punish your puppy you will only confuse him and he will begin to mistrust you. This is not the kind of relationship you want with your puppy.

When training your puppy it is best to avoid inadvertently training some bad behavior. What may seem cute as a puppy can be totally unacceptable as an adult dog. An example might be jumping. As a small puppy jumping up on you is no big deal, however if a 80 to 90 pound dog jumps up on you he could very well hurt you.

Another common bad behavior that people tend to reinforce is barking. At first it does not seem to be that big of an issue. However when the dog continues to bark it becomes a problem.

It becomes more of a problem because most people tend to yell at their dogs to try and get them to shout. When you yell at your dog he sees it as you barking and joining in on the fun. Your yelling is barking to him, so this is not the approach to take.

What you need to do is ignore him when he is barking and when he stops reward him.

So when training that new puppy remember it is all about positive reinforcements. Sticking to positive reinforcements will help you achieve a well trained dog that has a wonderful bond with you. There is nothing better than man's best friend when he is properly trained.
