How To Achieve Amazing Results From Your Canine Training Program

Training your dog is an important part of dog ownership. Unless you get a mature dog, you will need to potty train your puppy if you don't want accidents in the house. Probably even more important is to teach your dog that you are his master, and he must obey you.

If your dog is sick or injured, don't punish it for doing something outside of it's control. If it vomits in the house, that would normally be considered a bad action, but in the case of sickness they may not be able to control it. Instead take your pet to the vet to see if or what is wrong.

When formally training your dog to complete specific skills like sitting or shaking hands on command, work with them in short slots of time interspersed throughout the day. Just as humans can grow bored or even angry when being required to complete one monotonous action after another, so can dogs.

Make sure to get everyone involved in training. If you are the only member of the family working with Fido's behavior, then the other members of the family are giving him mixed signals. Consistency is extremely important in canine training. Also make sure that everyone is using the same key words and rewards so that the behavior will be reinforced correctly. Off and down are two different things to a dog, so make sure you aren't confusing him.

Training doesn't only happen during designated training sessions. Every time you interact with your pup, you are training him. Make sure to stay consistent in your commands and requests and to continue to reinforce those good behaviors. If you are training him to stay off the couch, don't let him jump up there while you are watching a show. Stay consistent at all times with what you want him to do and you will see the rewards.

Puppies tend to nip as a way of communicating, and this should be curbed. It is normally a signal that they want to play. If you observe a puppy with his litter mates, this is the way that they interact with each other. When your puppy nips you, say 'no' firmly, and immediately give him a toy to play with.

Make certain you're consistent when you are crate training your young puppy. When he comes out of the crate, you must immediately allow him to relieve himself in an appropriate place. Over time, the puppy will learn to wait until he is in this location.

Watch your demeanor when you are training your dog. You need to remain calm, but assertive at all times. Do not show anger or raise your voice. If you do this, your dog will require you to shout commands in order to follow them, if this is how he is trained.

It's a good idea to keep in mind the number of treats you are giving your dog throughout the day. Giving him too many will add unneeded calories to his diet and cause him to become overweight. A lot of pet owners don't think about how much weight their dogs can put on with treats.

If you do not have the knowlege to train your dog yourself it is wise to take him to obedience school. The instructor will show you how to teach your dog to obey your commands, and as a result, he will be more enjoyable to you and your family, and he will be happier.
