More than half of dog owners today are choosing dog names much like they would their children’s names, whereas only about one fifth are using traditional dog names like fluffy or blackie, or names that depict the dog’s breed or looks. The top 10 names on Animal Shelter’s list are:

Stay away from names that sound like commands that you will be giving your dog. Try not to rhyme your dog’s name with sit, for example. Okay, maybe that’s a bad example, but you get my meaning. When you think you’ve found a name you like, go ahead and give it a try for a day or two and see how it feels after that. If you still love it, keep it. If not, then move on to the next, but don’t wait too long or your puppy will get confused. If your dog is adopted, try to keep his or her given name.
