Inception of this breed is probably somewhere in ancient Greece. There is mention about little hunting dogs, which were used in rabbit hunting, in old records written by ancient Greek writers, and it is conclusive it is an ancestor of a Beagle we know today.
These dogs were although noticeably smaller than today’s Beagles. In England, where they were brought in 1066, the hunters used to carry them in saddleback bags. The Beagle is probably an descendant of harriers and old English hounds. They were a favourite hunting dogs of the royal family. Queen Elisabeth I., William III. Orange and George IV were also owners of this cute dog. Beagles used to always be used as dogs, hunting in packs. Because it has very strong advanced pack sense, it mixes very well with any other breeds.
Arranged breeding of this breed begun in the end of the 19th century. A club of breeders was established in England in 1890 and few years later this breed made it to the USA. Today Beagles are breeding more as buddy dogs, than hunting dogs.

The Beagle has a charming, friendly nature and is usually never disruptive, but it is not easy to scare either. It’s an independent dog, who if not being cared for properly, has an tendency to run away. It is very easy to take care of them, and they are very friendly.
To his family, the Beagle is very friendly and affectionate. Usually they are chummy to unknown people too. If they grow up with cats or other household animals, there should be no problems with them existing together. Also with other dogs Beagles get on with very well.
Beagles have a very good connection with kids, and they usually become very playful friends.

A Beagle is never going to be thoroughly obedient. Its training is therefore very important, but it has to be sensitive and not forced. This dog doesn’t like to go over again one trick on and on. If you are trying to train the dog as a part of game, it is good to stimulate him with some treats.
As Beagles are considered to be hunting dogs, it is effortless for them to manage all tasks for hounds with top marks. Lately Beagles are being used as search dogs for narcotics and explosives, mostly for their brilliant sniffing sense.
Beagles are not very good guard dogs. They signal that there are visitors are coming, but they are usually very welcoming and affectionate!
