2016/5/3 16:27:26

Otterbein Varsity in Westerville, Ohio is a 4 year establishment that’s run on a non-profit basis. The College’s Equine Science Department gives scholars who need to succeed in professions related to the equine industry an inspirational experience. Otterbein Varsity works on the principle that students learn best while doing, and what this means is that students are given all opportunities to practice what they are taught. They trim hooves, make horse shoes, foal mares, give injections, bandage legs and do many other things which make for necessary practical work in the horse industry.

Otterbein University gives students a choice between one minor and three major streams in equine science. The College’s degree in Equine Business & Facility Management is designed to produce graduates well equipped to make their careers in horse-related business and in management of horse-related facilities. The core of the curriculum is the horse, and there’s a robust business component. Potential careers for graduates include:

– Operation of facilities

– Specialisation insurance

– Writing/publishing

– Administrating race tracks, sport disciplines, breed organizations and facilities for competition

– Management of farms

– Management of events

– Sales

– Promoting/distribution: horse related products.

Scholars can also take up graduate studies in Business Administration and Law. This major comprises courses from the College’s Departments of Business, Accounting, Equine Science, Economics, English, Communication and Arithmetic.

Other Equine Science courses available include degrees in Pre-veterinary Medicine and Pre-graduate Studies. This unique stream leads to a fantastic opportunity for students to learn some pre-veterinary medicine; it also gives those students who are keen on graduate studies opportunities to work with and on horses at the College’s equine centre, so enabling scholars to graduate with practical veterinary experience. Students get to meet the prerequisites for admission into fully fledged veterinary programs after studying horses closely over 4 semesters, during which period they get well versed in pony anatomy/physiology, illnesses/afflictions, current methods of diagnosis and treatment, diagnosis and preventive measures. Scholars get the close attention of their advisors and this guarantees that they’re in a position to meet all prerequisites for entering veterinary programs.

The College’s Equine Health Technology major is founded upon an understanding of articulation involving the Veterinary Technology Programme of Columbus State Community College and Otterbein College’s Equine Science Dept. When they complete their four years, scholars who have succeeded in meeting the requirements of both establishments are given two degrees: Associate of Applied Science from Columbia State and Baccalaureate from Otterbein. These students are now eligible for the National Examination for Veterinary Experts, which enables them to get registration as Veterinary Specialist at the Ohio Vet Medical Licensing Board. The Veterinary Technology Program of Columbus State has accreditation from the North American Veterinary Medical Association.

Students can choose an equine science minor, which has the goal of providing students with other majors an opportunity to build up a robust information base on horses and pony care. These students get to enhance their equestrian abilities, and are made to take a proactive approach to their course in a rather similar way as the equine studies major scholars are.

Students get to spend substantial time at the College’s Equestrian Centre, about 5 miles to the north. This Centre presently has a barn with 25 stalls, 25 horses, indoor arenas, out of doors arenas, round pens, cross-country courses and quite a few paddocks and pastures.
