How To Travel With Your Dog

For most people, a vacation is one of the best remedies for stress. Additionally, touring an exotic location can be much more fun if it’s done with a companion. For those who aren’t able to drag along a friend or relative to join in on the adventure, bringing along “man’s best friend” becomes a very attractive alternative.

While traveling it is preferable to choose and bring a compatible dog travel companion in order to avoid trouble. Labrador Retriever is one such faithful and dependable travel companion. There is no doubt that it is an expansive breed but they are one amongst the most amusing and pliant dogs. Brussels Griffon, a rodent-hunting Belgian breed is another example of a good travel companion. In the 19th century they were usually brought by Belgian carriage drivers whilst traveling long distances.

If you are looking for an even tinier breed of dog that likes to go everywhere, consider the small English bulldog or the diminutive Maltese. Each of these is so small that they can be brought just about anywhere in your arms or in a traveling case. And when you get lonely these dogs love to snuggle on your lap and cuddle with you.

If you do decide to bring “man’s best friend” on your vacation, make sure to do a little extra planning. Seek out activities that are dog friendly. Obviously, you wouldn’t want to plan 3/4 of your vacation scuba diving. Also, the mode of transportation to get to the destination can pose problems for certain dog breeds.

Another important thing to be noted is that air travel is not preferred option to travel with dog. Dogs or other pets are treated as cargo based on their size. However the teensy-weensy ones allowed boarding the plane with their owners.

For air travel with larger breeds, most are required to be crated and stored in the cargo area. This can be quite traumatizing for your friend. Being cooped up with all of the hazardous chemical shipments only makes matters worse.

That means that traveling in a car with your pet is probably the way to go. You will be able to pace yourself on your trip. And you will not worry about your dog getting lost en route or being unhappy. Just make sure that the dog does not feel trapped and can move around in your vehicle. Also you are going to have to stop periodically to let the dog stretch and move and relieve himself.

This vacation apart from serving as a form of recreation may also be an opportunity of bonding between the dog and the owner. Adequate arrangements need to be taken care of to ensure that the bonding or the holiday is grand success.
