What is the Best Dog Barking Collar for Small Breeds

You may not know this but smaller breeds of dog are usually the most likely to possess and develop the habit of excessive barking, but don’t think that other breeds of dog don’t bark! The fact is every type of canine buddy, be it small or large will most likely get used to barking even with the tiniest reasons, mainly because no one does anything about it. What makes smaller breeds a unique issue is because they cannot be exposed to virtually every kind of training or stimuli.

We all know that dog bark collars are the latest and most effective means of calming pets whenever they bark excessively. However, small breeds do not possess the same tolerance and physique to be able to withstand all kinds of stimulus. That means using the “not so gentle stimuli” could potentially inflict unnecessary pain and even injury to your small buddy.

Years ago, dog training was always done while they were still young. There’s the old saying that emphasizes old dogs can’t be taught new tricks. So reprimanding or scolding the dog when it is barking excessively in its old age isn’t effective anymore. Even verbal training is becoming time consuming and sometimes not really all that effective.

In order to address the common problem of excessive barking, dog barking collar types were invented. To date there are three popular kinds. Firstly, there’s the one that emits sound waves in order to repel barking. It works in such a way that a certain kind of irritating noise is released to the ears of the animal. As soon as it hears the sound, the unpleasant feeling provides an effective stimulus in order for it to stop barking. The next type is a rather aggressive approach to prevention. It uses electric surges or basically electrocuting the animal to prevent it from barking. Lastly, there’s the milder but equally effective natural citronella-based spray. This substance provides an ugly and unpleasant sensation to the dog’s nose, giving it reason to stop barking.

Based on the mechanism and type of stimulus, it can be said that citronella-based spray is the most effective for smaller dog breeds. Sound wave is effective but only for a short time as when the dog starts to adjust to the sound, it becomes immune to it.

The problem can be that as soon as the dog gets used to it, it ceases to become an effective stimulus for it to stop barking. Likewise, the electric shock dog bark collar is rather dangerous for small dog breeds. While it may be effective for the more hardy breeds such as Pit Bulls, Rottweiler’s, and other large dogs, you can never say for sure that it would be safe for Chihuahuas or Toy Poodles.

Therefore, it is evident that not all dog barking collar types are best used when it comes to small dog breeds. In fact, the only one that’s basically safe for them is the citronella dog collar. The best reason for opting for citronella is that it combines effectiveness and safety in application.

Citronella is best applied to small dogs because there is no pain or injury involved. What it does instead is provide an unpleasant stimulus in the form of a horrible smell and with that alone, the dog realizes that it shouldn’t be barking all the time or it will suffer the same kind of “smelly” experience all over again each time it barks!
