Dog Trainer Techniques To Socialize Your Dog

If you are the owner of a new puppy, then you need to make socializing your pet a first order item so they can learn to deal with the unfamiliar in a non-aggressive way. This will help you to circumvent your dog getting into bad habits such as anger or aggressive behavior. Most dog owners don’t consider themselves to be a dog trainer, but that is what they are, so here are some Dos and Don’ts to enable you so that you can do the right thing.

The first thing to know is the list of dos in order to socialize your little pup. For instance, you need to be sure that when you introduce your dog to someone or something new, you do it pleasantly. You’ll want your pet to associate training with positive relations with you. You want your puppy to really be hungry for this, not dread it, and not to be afraid.

Begin by meeting with your friends, and be sure to include a variety of people of different ages and sexes. The more variety of people they meet now, then the less protective they’ll feel later on. Once this is done, then you can begin to repeat the process with healthy and playful, obedient dogs. You want to be sure your puppy is getting to know other good dogs that will be a good friend to your pup.

Finally, you’ll want to get your puppy exposed and out to as many different places as possible. Take your pet places – the local pet store, different parks and playgrounds, school campuses, all over your neighborhood. This will teach them that it is OK to be around new settings and people, and make you a better dog trainer.

Once you have read the “dos” list, here are the things you don’t want to be guilty of doing to socialize your pet. Of course, you shouldn’t put off socializing your puppy too long. If you hesitate on this note, then you’ll only make it more difficult to overcome the sheltered life he’s used to. Expose them gradually, but begin soon.

Yet another thing on the “don’ts” list is don’t put your puppy near other animals that you are not familiar with – they could be harmful to your cause. It can be exceedingly traumatic for a new puppy to get attacked, and can make your dog an aggressive dog in the future.

If your puppy begins to be afraid, then you don’t want to accidentally reward the behavior by soothing them with reassuring words and physical affection. Later down the road, this may develop into biting, which isn’t something that you want to be responsible for.

Naturally, you’ll want to be sure you are a patient dog trainer. You don’t want to try and force the process, since every dog will learn at his or her own pace. You will have much greater results if you simply let your dog make progress at their pace, confidently building one block on another. If you rush them through it, you will find they haven’t learned at all.
