If You Are Looking for an Unusual Pet, Betta Fish Will Not Disappoint You

For anybody interested in buying an unusual pet, Betta fish are the number one choice. These beautiful and stunning fish, sometimes referred to as Siamese fighting fish, have long fins and come in many beautiful colors. The males are more striking than the females, as is typical in many aquatic creatures.

Highly Aggressive Males

Although different in many ways as compared to other pets, Betta fish are easy to take care of as long as you understand how they interact with other fish. Their highly aggressive nature makes it nearly impossible to share the tank with any fish, including their own species. The colorful males typically strike out and hurt or kill any other fish they think is threatening their territory.

Enjoying Their Solitude

The female of the species is not quite as aggressive, can live in small groups of six to eight females, and require only that there be foliage, nooks and crannies for the less aggressive fish to hide. Placing two males together in the same tank will have dire consequences, as one of them will most likely be severely hurt or killed. However, by themselves they are not aggressive at all and do quite well in their solitude.

Tank Size Is Important

They require an aquarium that can hold at least five gallons water, so the natural environment does not become overrun with bacteria typically created in smaller vessels. Filtering the water will keep the Betta fish free of harmful diseases and ailments. They naturally enjoy hiding behind real or artificial foliage or inside underwater structures large enough to hold them.

If you are looking for a very unusual pet, Betta fish will not disappoint you. They are easy to take care of, eat a very specific diet of bloodworms, fishmeal, larvae or brine shrimp, and because they live alone, do not make much of a mess.
