How ToTrain Your Dog

All of us with dogs at home know just how important dog training is. It is possible to train dogs of all ages, not only puppies and it not only saves mess and destruction in your house but results in a content dog too.

I am the proud owner of a Border Terrier dog named Ruby. She is almost two years old and I bought her as a puppy. A friend of mine already had two border terriers of her own and gave me lots of advice and information about their temperament, size, grooming and exercise before I decided this was the breed for me.

Before you go ahead and by a puppy, make sure you find out as much as possible about the breed you want. Puppies are very cute but can grow into large adult dogs which need lots of exercise and room to live in. You must make sure you can accommodate a large dog if that's what you like and take it for long walks if necessary.

At first I felt I was getting nowhere. All I seemed to do was follow her around and try to teach her the basics. I knew that praise when necessary was essential to her training progress. Regardless of what you are training your dog to do, you will find that lots of praise and encouragement works wonders. The more they get it right, the more they want to please you.

You also need to let your dog know, with a stern voice, when they do something wrong. They will recognize this voice immediately and respond. Do not hit your dog for doing wrong. They do not understand what they are being hit for, and often either fight back or think it is a game.

If you are finding it difficult to teach your dog to walk properly with collar and lead I would highly recommend buying a harness. There are many designs available in shops or online, and once fitted they can easily be removed and replaced for walks. My dog just got too excited to walk properly at first, but with a harness I was able to teach her to walk better and not drag me everywhere.

Before you get started with puppy training or dog training read as much as possible about methods and get some advice. The best place is a good dog training guide book, which will prove to be invaluable over time. In order to achieve results you really have to devote some time and energy into training your dog. Please make sure you do this in a safe environment and make the whole thing as much fun as possible for best results.

My dog is not perfect like a show dog, but she is now obedient and great fun to have around. I hope you have found these tips on dog training useful as a starting point. If you are interested in finding out how to train your dog, or any other dog questions, you can find everything you need in my recommended guide book.
