Are you the leader of your pack, or your canine learn more now

2016/5/3 14:50:32
By now we all know that dogs came from wolves. We抳e been able to create different breeds and varieties but one thing has remained the same. And that is the fact that dogs are pack animals and must belong to the pack. That one thing is the fact that dogs are pack animals and must belong to a pack. Whether you have one or many dogs, your dog will find his place in the pack even if consist of just you and him, or you and your family members and him and a few other furry four legged friends. Dogs aren抰 like people, they don抰 like to be alone. The pack to them means, survival, protections and communion. But everyone has to have their place in the pack, which means vying for position of the leader. There抯 one in every pack. That means the leader controls where they eat, when they sleep and even who breeds with whom. That抯 a lot of control. Imagine if you will now one dog in a house full of humans with that type of control. I know it sounds hard to believe but many humans have given the control to the dogs so to speak and live by their rules. Always fearing they will displease or anger him. They are constantly worrying if he抯 torn up their new couch, or lifted his leg on their new comforter. They shy away from him because he growls at them while he eats but the dog is not to blame for his behavior. Only the humans can be blamed for the behavior of the dog. So how do you become the leader of the pack and what does it mean?

Leader of the pack means diligence, and consistency. Accepting the responsibility of providing food, shelter and protection will prove your ability to be the leader. They look to you for direction. They will look for a way in the beginning to assume control through any inconsistency on your part. It抯 not their fault it抯 just in their nature. While you might not have your eyes on him constantly in those first few days and weeks he will have his eyes on you. Learning you, learning what is allowed and what is not. Will they be allowed to pee on the bed or will you deal with them quickly and appropriately. Will you allow more space if they growl while they eat or will you issue a command to stop. While out for their walk, will pulling you be allowed or will they follow your lead. All of this will be taken into their consideration when deciding if your are able to be their leader. Now if we抮e talking about puppies then we抮e talking about members of the pack who haven抰 been taught the proper mannerisms yet or what抯 right from wrong, and they will look to you for guidance. But an older animal maybe one you rescued or adopted will require more work. Because these animals had no home for whatever reason you抳e provided one of the requirements of a leader by providing a home to them. To determine if any pre-existing behavioral problems exist any reputable shelter or rescue will pre-screen their animals. So when taking on an older pet ask as many questions as you can about the animals behavior.

No matter the age obedience training and consistency are the best courses of action. Inserting yourself as leader of the pack is done for the best welfare of the pack. Establishing yourself as the leader will ensure that your pet finds his place within the rest of the pack relatively quickly if there is a pack. And hopefully their will be harmony and love for everyone. Love, harmony and togetherness are the ultimate goal of the pack.
