It is often said that nothing is more important for a nation than its sovereignty and to preserve that sense of freedom, hundreds of thousands of soldiers who make up the nation抯 army. These warriors put their lives on stake for their country. Many lose their lives, limbs or some other body part in battle. Some even lose their vision. In any case, a considerable number suffers from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and don抰 know how to fit into ordinary normal, physical life. A lot is done to relieve these war vets off their stress ?therapy, self help groups, medicine etc. These work at times, but in most of the cases the veteran feels claustrophobic and pushes himself/herself to drink, drugs or even death.
Often, the family of the soldier expects him or her to be happy when he/she gets back from the grisly world of war, but instead find that their loved one has become withdrawn or even hostile. It is almost like meeting a stranger in the guise of your loved one. The soldier withdraws within his/her shell and refuse to come out of it, regardless of anything. Fortunately, there is paws for veterans that help them come out of their shell and adjust better to civilian life by using special service dogs with special training for disabled people and soldiers suffering from PTSD.
There are dogs which are especially trained for veterans suffering from PTSD. The most commonly used breeds are Labradors, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. These dogs are especially trained from about a month or two from their birth to most of their lives until they find a suitable match. Like all such service dogs which are used for physically handicapped people, these dogs help war veteran perform everyday tasks and chores and help them adjusting to the normal, 慶ivilian?life till they get better and regain their independence. The dogs can appropriately alert, distract and even respond to various psychological symptoms and situations that a patient may go through. For instance, these dogs can break a patient out of a frozen moment caused by trauma or anxiety or wake the receipt if he his having nightmares by switching on the light or providing water. The dogs play with them, help them with routine work and act as their assistance, attendant or friend.
