Many people have the misconception that a Beagle must be strictly for hunting. We are here to set the record straight about this dog breed.

If you have ever heard a Beagle bark or howl, you will likely be able to recognize the signature sounds from a distance and know exactly what dog breed it is. The howl that a Beagle is best known for is how they alert their hunting companion. However, this howl is often considered to be very annoying to neighbors.

When this dog breed is properly socialized with people and animals they can be a very fun loving and energetic addition to any home. They enjoy being with children and other dogs. A Beagle should be supervised if you have other pets in your home because it is in their nature to hunt, even if you have never brought your beagle to hunt before.

A Beagle can be on the stubborn side when it comes to obedience. Persistence in training and constancy are going to prove to be beneficial with your Beagle. This dog breed does require regular exercise. Running, walking and playing are great ways for you to ensure your Beagle does not become overweight. Remember, an active dog is a happy dog.

A common problem when people decide to make a Beagle part of their family is overeating. Generally, we do not mean to over feed our dogs, but we do. Especially when the cute little sad face is looking up at you while you are having dinner, we almost cant help ourselves. Im not going to lecture you on the importance of your dog eating healthy, just be aware of what his or her future might hold if you are overfeeding your Beagle.

If your yard is not fenced in, you might want to keep a Beagle on a leash. They tend to block everything out when they catch a scent trail that is more interesting than what you want them to do. This dog breed becomes very focused, and will follow a trail until it goes cold. This could leave you traipsing through the woods in your area for hours trying to bring Fido back home.

This particular dog breed has become popular in homes across the globe. They make great companions for a house full of children and adults to the house with a single person. They adapt to their environment fairly well, as long as they do get the time and attention they deserve. This dog breed has come a long way since their days as hunting dogs.

Because this dog breed is considered to be small, weighing up to 25 pounds they can be great companions for an apartment dweller. However, leaving a Beagle cooped up in the apartment all day long is not recommended. This dog breed needs to get plenty of exercise on a daily basis, one quick walk a day will not cut it. No matter how obedient your dog is, this dog breed will take off in an attempt to find wild game, as their instincts will take over.
