I suppose you can guess which dog breed made number one...it’s been number one for the past 22 years and has done it again this year....yup the Labrador Retriever, now breaking the all time popularity record. The American Kennel Club, founded in 1884, announced the 2013 list. The top ten breeds of 2013 after the Labradors are German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Bulldogs, Yorkshire Terriers, Boxers, Poodles (who previously held the 22 year record), Rottweilers and Dachshunds. No longer on the top ten list are the Shih tzus and the Chihuahas.

The Labrador Retriever is popular as they are good with children and other pets. For people who want a medium sized, sturdy dog the Lab is also a calm house dog but are playful outside and love to swim. They love to please “their people” being very obedient. Labs make excellent guide dogs for the blind and also used in police work and helping the military. They are also popular worldwide, especially inCanada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

The German Shepherd has many of the same traits as the Lab. They are also used as guide dogs and used for helping the police and military as they possess a combination of loyalty, intelligence and that “eager to learn” mentality. Golden Retrievers, as their name implies, are great retrievers. Who doesn’t love playing a good game of catch? They are also a wonderful, devoted family dog as they have a sweet nature and are easy to train. And who hasn’t seen the movie “Homeward Bound?” Goldens are also used as guide dogs for the blind. Coming in as the fourth most popular are those lovable Beagles. They are the inspiration behind many famous cartoon characters. Snoopy from the “Peanuts” cartoon strip by Charles Schultz is perhaps the worlds’s most famous beagle, to be followed by Odie from the “Garfield” cartoon by Jim Davis.

And for Dachshund lovers you have to watch the following video, http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2l9ltI. I don’t know who is smarter, the dog, or his human who set up the ball throwing device, thus keeping his dog happy and trim, while the human is probably sitting on a nearby couch with a beer?!

So who just missed making the top ten? Coming in at number eleven is the French Bulldog. They have become extremely popluar over the past ten years. They were number 58 in 2002. Brigitte is the French Bulldog who is famous for her role on the ABC television show, “Modern Family.” Nothing like being on a hit show to help publicize the breed. Remember the Jack Russell Terrier, Moose, who played Eddie on “Frasier?” for many years and starred in the film “My Friend Skip.”

I personally own two Standard Schnauzers. I think I need to get one of them on a hit television show or their own cartoon strip so more people will see what a wonderful, loyal, intelligent breed they are!
