Pets The Sky Is The Limit for 2014 Westminster Dog Winner

tr> Try as I might, I just couldn’t resist writing an article about The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show that was just held at Madison Square Garden. It just such a guilty pleasure to be able to sit on my couch and see so many different breeds of incredible dogs with their “clothing and shoe challenged” trainers. Of course my Standard Schnauzer Gracie is pretending to sleep next to me...she’s acting like she doesn’t need to see all these “fancy” dogs. Groomers work in chalk dust into the legs of Schnauzers to get the hair to fluff up. Gracie wants none of that.

So those feisty, adorable terriers did it again. A terrier again won Best of Show with to “GCH After all Painting The Sky” a.k.a. “Sky,” a Wire Fox Terrier a six year old female. The terriers have won Best In Show 45 times since this has been awarded starting in 1907. The Wire Fox Terriers having won Group wins 21 times and 4 Consecutive Group wins back in 1928 to 1931.

My son was lucky enough one year to be able to attend the show a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised how you are allowed to get up close to see the dogs backstage.

Me, personally, I’m just so happy when the Standard Poodle doesn’t win. Though, this year the Reserve Best In Show was awarded to “GCH Brighton Lakeridge Encore,” a Standard Poodle. The intense grooming required for these poodles makes me crazy. Who wants to go out in public with a dog that has two pom poms on their back? I want to see what one of these dogs look like on their “off season” when they first wake up in the morning! And talk about grooming. The coolest but most bizarre award has to go to the Komondor. Check out http://2000dogs.com/komondor.htm to see a full grown “whitemop” dog. The grooming of this dog is definitely left to the professionals. Their hair is groomed into long cords that continue to grow.

If you are thinking of adopting a dog then I like to think of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show as a quick way to see and learn a little about every kind of breed. But, then do some real homework before you make your final choice. You want a dog that is going to fit with your family’s lifestyle. Do you mind having a dog that needs a lot of grooming? What size dog is best for you...not everyone has the room for a Great Dane! On the other hand, I loved that Miniature Pinscher who won the Toy Group, but I would worry that the dog was so small someone could easily step on her...
