Pets Maxs Pet Crate Should Be Their Private Den

tr> You did it! You just adopted the puppy of your dreams. The kids are so excited too. But now you have to buy a dog crate and a crate pad that both you and the puppy will love. It will be his very own den to satisfy his natural den instincts. This will be a safe place for Max to stay when you have to leave the house or sleep in at night. You now know that your shoe collection will be safe too.

Remember your puppy will grow up soon...so pick a crate that will big enough to allow him to stretch out in. Most plastic crates have slits in them so your dog can still see out. These slits also offers ventilation. Metal ones are “more open” and collapsible if you think you will need to move it around. However, because they are more open I would suggest that you try and place it up against a corner wall, that way two sides of it will make the crate feel more like a cave. I would also suggest placing a throw over the top but avoid anything with fringe. Your dog would probably be attracted to the fringe and try and pull it into the crate and eat it. I personally do not leave a water dish in their crate. The plastic cups that usually come with the crate will probably be considered a chew toy. Plus, depending on how long you need to keep your pet in the crate, you do not want to encourage any wetting. I try to never leave my dog more than a few hours at the most when I can’t be home. Make sure Max has “done his business” before leaving him for any length of time. Remember the crate can be used to help house train your dog but a dog will always need human interaction as they strive on love and attention.

You should learn to experiment with different chew, play toys to find out which our Fido’s favorites. I save my two year old Standard Schnauzer, Rosie’s favorite “Gnwin’ Forever” chew treat for only when she is in the crate. She is still a real chewer and I have found this to be great for both of us. You will probably want to avoid squeak toys...for obvious reasons...especially if you live in a apartment building! However, you should still keep the radio or TV on low setting to ease any potential separate anxiety issues.

You also need to think about getting a quality crate pad. If you have an older dog, consider getting a self warming one with a non-slip bottom. A self warming pad works with your dog’s body heat. This is also great if you have to leave any of your dogs or puppy in a colder or drafty environment like a basement, porch or garage. If you have access to a electrical plug, then you could consider a soft heated dog bed that can fit inside the crate. There are also orthopedic versions, again for that older dog who has joint problems. These super soft pads feature a safe, low wattage heater that you can regulate to provide soothing heat. Look for crate pads that come with a zipper so that you can remove the cover for easy, machine washing.

A dog that is comfortable in a dog crate will also make it easier for you to take your pet for car trips. Putting a crate in your car or SUV will keep your eyes on the road and Fido safe at the same time.

Keeping your “best furry friend” safe, warm and feeling secure will make both of you happy! Look through our collection of plush crate pads that come in a variety of colors too. Remember you may also need a second pad. Keep a pad in the room of your house that doesn’t have the crate in it so your dog can nap comfortably while you take the couch.
