Pets All Dogs Go To Heaven

tr> My beloved Standard Schnauzer, Gracie is over 14 years old. Last April she started to have health problems. This past January, Gracie’s veterinarian told me that she probably had about 6 months left. Gracie is still with me but I try every day to appreciate her a little bit more and try to prepare myself for when she’s in heaven. I have to remind myself that she has lived a long, healthy and loving life! There are blogs that offer pet bereavement support that I will want to visit when the time comes.

I plan to have her cremated, and was able to find a china dog figurine that I plan to put her ashes in. There are websites that sell urns that are in the shape of different dog breeds. I just couldn’t see myself putting her “in a box.” We are lucky to live in a wooded area where I could find a spot to bury her, but having her in the figurine, I know she will be with me if we ever move. Also, this practice of burying your pet on your property is becoming illegal in some states. So you should check that out before you decide what to do. The cost of creamation is based on the size of your dog. It can range from $100 to $350. You will need to check locally for specific pricing. First ask your veterinarian if they offer this service. If you do go to a cremation facility, ask if they do mass or individual creamations. These facilities will have someone on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If needed, they will pick up your pet from your home or veterinarian.

For people who want to get “creative,” your pet’s ashes can be scattered into the sea. Families can watch from the boat or stay on the shore. This may cost from $250-$350. The Eternal Ascent Society located in New Port Richey, Florida will put your pet’s remains in a 5 foot balloon, add helium, and then releases it in a location of the family’s choice. This service comes with music and remembrances and the cost starts at $399. LifeGem is a company, located in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, that takes the remains of your pet and turns them into a colorless, blue, red, yellow or green synthetic diamond. This process costs from $1,999 to $24,999! And of course, there are Pet Cemetaries or mausoleum space that you can purchase for your pet. Buying this area, plus a headstone or plaque can cost from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

I came across the following article that I think sums up how we feel about our pets. It’s from the Onondaga Kennel Association’s Home Page of Syracuse, NY.

“It’s Just a Dog”

From time to time people tell me lighten up: “It’s just a dog” or “That’s lots of money for just a dog.” They don¹t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved in just a dog.

Some of my proudest moments have come about with just a dog, many hours have passed and my only company was just a dog, but I did not once feel slighted. Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by just a dog, and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of just a dog gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day. If you do think it’s just a dog, then you will probably understand phrases like, just a friend, just a sunrise or just a promise.

Just a dog brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. Just a dog brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person, because of just a dog. I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it’s not just a dog but a embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, fond memories of the past and pure joy of the moment. Just a dog brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it is not just a dog, but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being just a man or woman. So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog,” just SMILE ...because they just “Don’t understand.”

A home without a dog is merely a shelter.
