Here's How Carbon Filters Work
Charcoal is carbon. Activated charcoal is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. These kinds of active, or activated, charcoals are commonly used to adsorb odorous or colored substances from gases or liquids. Activated charcoal is good at trapping other carbon-based impurities ("organic" chemicals), in addition to things like chlorine. Many other chemicals are not attracted to carbon whatsoever sodium, nitrates, etc. therefore they pass right through.
This means that an activated charcoal filter will remove certain impurities while ignoring others. Additionally, it means that, once all of the bonding sites are filled, an activated charcoal filter stops working. At this point you need to replace the filter. There are two predominant varieties of carbon filters used in the filtration industry: powdered block filters and granular activated filters. In general, carbon block filters are better at removing a larger quantity of contaminants, based upon the increased surface area of carbon.
Many carbon filters also use secondary media, such as silver or Kdf-55, to prevent bacteria growth within the filter. Alternatively, the activated carbon itself can be impregnated with silver to produce this bacteriostatic property.
One of the devices that has filtering is the Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain and has activated carbon replacement filters that are created from coconut shells. These coconut shells are put through a process called carbonization, which removes all other elements other than carbon.
The carbon is then ‘activated’ by adding back oxygen which creates a material that is suitable for adsorption. The activated carbon the has the ability to absorb basic water contaminants, as well as chlorine from tap water. The result is better tasing water and water which doesn't have any odors. Yet another excellent pet water dispenser with a carbon filter is the Drinkwell 360 Pet Fountain that has replaceable charcoal filter that removes bad tastes and odors from your pets water. Along with the charcoal filter the filtration technology of the Drinkwell 360 constantly circulates the water which inhibits bacteria growth, keeping the water tasting fresh which makes it more appealing for your pets
