Motivating a dog in training isn't always easy. I thought I'd write today's article on how to motivate your dog. There are a variety of training methods out there, I believe the most popular right now, is clicker training and positive reinforcement training. Both of these require you to have something that will motivate your dog.
What exactly do I mean when I say motivate your dog? I mean find something they will willingly work for. If your dog loves food, use treats during training. If they love toys, use toys during training. Motivating your dog is all about finding what works for them. Please note, it's not what You think Should be motivating to your dog, it's really what THEY find motivating. Not all dogs love treats and not all dogs love toys.
If you have a dog that love treats or toys, you're in good shape for positive reinforcement training! congratulations! Feel lucky because there are a lot of dogs out there who are not motivated by these. I've worked with a few of them. If your dog loves both toys and treats, you're in even better shape. Use the clicker mixed with toys and treats, your dog will sky-rocket in his or her training!
There are a lot of books and such out there that will teach you all about clicker training and rewards, let me give you a quick run down of it. If using a clicker for the first time, you first need to do what they call 'charging' the clicker. This means making sure the dog knows that every time he hears that click, he is getting a reward! The reward can be the treat or a toy.
Once your dog knows what that click means, you can get to training. Now you simply click at the instant your dog does something right, such as sitting, then reward them with either their treat or their toy! It's a simple way of training and a great way to implement training into every day busy lives. Once you know what motivates your dog, they sky is the limit.
