Avoid Indoor Pet Boredom

Pets that are kept inside most or all of the time can become bored easily if they do not have anything to do with their time.  Pets need mental or physical stimulation.  Otherwise, their boredom may fuel destructive behaviors.  Of course, pet owners will want to prevent this, so here are a few tips to that end.

Pets that are bored typically have energy to spare.  Therefore, you need to make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise.  After running or walking around for an adequate amount of time, there will not be that much energy left to be nearly as destructive.

When it comes to dog owners, the amount of exercise their pets need depend on their specific breed.  Some will need more physical stimulation than orders.  For example, working dogs like Border Collies will need much more exercise.

Providing your pet with toys will definitely help keep boredom at bay.  There are a wide range of toys you can buy to provide both physical and mental stimulation.  Just make sure your pet will remain interested in the toy for a while.

Like with children, not all dogs like all types of toys.  That is why it is best for you to buy a variety of toys so you can see which ones your particular pet likes.  Puzzles are good because it makes them think.  After they have successfully solved it, they will be rewarded with a treat.

Bones are always popular for dogs, especially if their personality prompts them to chew on items constantly.  It may not be the best idea to give your dog real bones though because chewing them can invite a few different health problems.

If the bone is too hard, your dog can fracture one of his teeth on it.  Once swallowed, the bones can splinter and cause internal bleeding or stomach irritation.  In some cases, the intestinal tract can even become blocked.

In addition to providing toys, another good way to cure pet boredom is to consider enrolling in daycare.  We are used to sending our children to daycare while we are at work since we cannot leave them home.  Sending your pet to daycare will provide him with plenty of activities and playmates while you have to be away.

Pets that are bored inside will likely look for something to get into.  To keep this from happening, give your pet toys to play with and make sure that you spend enough quality time with them.
