You can reserve punishment for serious offenses such as clawing on the furniture or urinating indoors. This should be no more than a firm rebuke and even a tap with something soft like a newspaper, which will convey your disappointment without actually hurting the animal.

The best dog training commands are short and are used with patience for the dog, along with a few treats.
