Burglar proofing your pet

29 13:40:55

Yes, pets get lost more than they get stolen, but pet theft is
becoming more and more of a problem with pet owners. It pays to
take some simple and inexpensive precautions that will prevent a
tragedy. Such things as tattooing all of your animals, and
micro-chipping is an excellent form of pet identification.
Remember to keep every gate into your property locked at all
times and you may want to even consider some fake security
cameras, which are almost guaranteed to deter a thief. Of
course, there is the favorite sign, and if it is done
professionally and with the right words can be very effective.
Make a sign and put the following words on it. “All animals on
this property are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and this
property is under constant video surveillance”. You will be
amazed at what an effective deterrent this is. Also if you live
in the country, even a locked chain across the driveway is a
good deterrent. Some thieves look for purebred animals to breed.

When you are taking your dogs off the lead on your property
remember to always have the dog wear one collar with
identification, or another collar attached to a lead. You would
be amazed at the number of dogs that have actually slipped out
of a collar, and have broken a latch with the owner left holding
the lead and a broken collar with the dog’s vital details
attached.

Remember to provide your neighbors with your pet’s numbers and
descriptions, and how to contact you in case of an emergency. It
is good to compile all of the numbers and have them readily
available in case of an emergency. You will be glad you did.
Write down and keep handy your local animal shelter’s contact
information, animal control service, emergency vet care
services, and any other Rescue Fire Department information.
Taking a few steps to protect your pet will give you and your
pet peace of mind.
