Pet Food Storage

My husband and I have two cats and two dogs. The dogs are hunting dogs and stay outside in a large kennel area. The cats are in the house full time. The dog's kennel is attached to a small storage shed in the yard.
The shed provides protection from the elements and also is a convenient spot for us to store the dog food.

After we had been storing the dog food for about two months my husband noticed that he would find pieces of the food scattered in the shed. After several days of this he discovered that a mouse had chewed a hole in the bottom of the bag. We decided that we were going to have to find pet food storage that would be mouse proof. Until we were able to go shopping my husband put a piece of duct tape over the hole.

The next day we went shopping. My husband insisted that we go to a pet supply store to find the pet food storage container. I tried to explain that we should check at a discount store first, but he thought that the pet supply place would have the best solution. The store had several containers for pet food storage. One had a device that would measure the exact amount for the pet and deliver it in a small container for feeding.

This was accomplished by setting the amount of food you wanted for the pet and then pressing a button each time you wanted to fill their dish. Gravity did the rest because the serving size came out at the bottom of the container. This deluxe container cost $75.00.

My husband decided that he could measure the food himself and we moved on to look at other containers. He settled on a flip lid plastic container that had paw prints on it. This heavy duty plastic bin was still expensive for pet food storage, but it was the cheapest the store had available.

After buying the pet food storage container we went to a discount store to pick up other items that we needed for the house. While I was finding the things that were on our shopping list my husband went off shopping by himself. I found him walking down the aisle carrying a large plastic container. It was the same size and style as the one that we had just purchased for the pet food storage. This container was less than half the cost of the one we bought. It did not have the paw prints on it, but otherwise it was the same container.

My husband put the container in my cart and told me he would pick me up at the front door. When I asked him where he was going he said that he was going to take the other container back. The container we bought at the discount store is perfect for the pet food storage. I am sure the dogs do not mind that it does not have paw prints on it.
