Dog Digging - How to Stop Your Dog from Digging

If you have dogs, I am sure you have already discovered one of their favorite past times, digging. Now, dogs will dig for various reasons, but not all of them are what you might think. Having an understanding of why your dog likes to dig will help you when you are trying to solve how to stop dogs from digging.

Digging for the Fun of It

Most dogs want to dig because it is an activity that will help to occupy their time and prevent them from becoming bored. For us, we play video games, watch our favorite shows on television, go out to enjoy a movie with someone or eat at our favorite restaurant to help us pass the time. Dogs cannot do this, so they will have to go to other measures to keep themselves free from becoming bored, and digging is one that seems to be at the top of that list.

Why Dogs Dig

Perhaps your dog is one of the breeds that love to dig, maybe he or she is acting out from feelings of frustration, loneliness or desperation, or he or she is one with loads of energy and no one to spend time with to help settle it down.

Some dogs feel fear, the same as we do, and they do not know how to cope with it, so they will dig whatever is around them. Figuring out how to stop dogs from digging may seem frustrating, and whatever the reason for the digging, learning how to improvise and alleviate as much of the dig-time as possible will help you and your dog.

Ways to Help Reduce Digging

Dogs love to take a good walk with their owners and will walk so proudly with their heads up high and tails wagging with excitement.
If you walk them for maybe half an hour or more, you will be helping to soothe that excess energy they cannot get rid of by sitting in the backyard or in the home. Make sure it is not too hot for them by picking a suitable time for the leisured enjoyment with your dog.

If your dog is as playful as some of mine have been, you can buy a ball specifically for him or her. Take a little time every day and go outside in your backyard or to the nearest park and kick the ball gently for your dog to chase and catch. Watching your dog chase the ball vigorously, as he or she is anticipating the next move is quite entertaining and will give you a lot of laughs.

Learning how to stop dogs from digging is only a matter of understanding and spending some of your time with them. If your dog still prefers to dig after you have exercised and played with him or her, you might consider picking a designated area solely for that purpose.

Don鈥檛 give up in your efforts when trying to figure out what works best in how to stop dogs from digging. Just remember, dogs need attention and love, too. So, be creative when exploring various ways to deter their desires for digging.
