     Created for food and breeding purpose in China 150 years ago the Cochin chicken has come a long way. The bird was developed to as food source originally and was later sent to Europe and America where it continued to be bred for food and its eggs. However due to their calm docile nature they were offered as pets to the queen of England who had a few of them.

One feature that makes them stand out is their plumage which covers them literally from head to toe and turns them into walking feather balls. The colorings come in a range of different colors including white, black, buff and brown barred. The birds can be found in other colors as well except in Australia where buff is the main color.

With the feathers and the tameness of the breed, this bird makes a wonderful pet for a family. But like human beings they are prone to depression and tend to sit for long periods of time when there are no eggs to lie on. It is documented that they do have a favorite past time of getting exercise walking and running around the yard.

In the area of egg production the breed is considered a medium laying breed because it does not produce a high amount of eggs. However the ones they do produce are of higher quality than the mass produced variety making them well worth the weight. The bird is also known as natural mother hen of sorts and enjoys spending time incubating multiple eggs at one time.

When taking care of a breed such as this, it is very important to maintain their grooming including keeping their foot plumage trimmed back. By keeping them well groomed their feathers will stay clean and pretty also they will be less prone to disease. When looking at poultry such as this, it is important to take into regard the climate where they will be living in, cold weather is more ideal for these birds due to their bodies and amount of feathers they have.

A properly cared for poultry can live for approximately 8-10 years and one that is put to work as a full time breeder is likely to live 2-3 years time. Since all poultry is prone to diseases and other issues, making contact with an animal doctor is a wise decision. Doctors can provide information on vaccines and other treatments that may be required.

Due to the high cost, breeders are the primary people that retain them as household pets. With the easy going nature of they are fine with children but should be monitored at all times when interacting with the kids. This goes for all types of animals not just these birds and is a good practice to get into.

Even though the Cochin chicken breed originated in China, the modern day birds are rarely directly related in any way to them. With all of the years that have passed and the many breeders involved this breed has become its own unique brand of bird. When considering a bird of this type as a pet remember to make sure the climate is right as they do not do well in hot areas, cold areas are fine though.
