Cat Owners Guide - When to Visit the Vet

Cat owners are drawn to the feeling that their pets do not need that much attention. Well, it really is a known fact that cats are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. Even without taking a bath, they can remain odorless. Unlike dogs, cats can very well stand on their own. But, if you are taking care of a cat, you are willing to go the extra mile just for your favorite pet. Of course, that is understandable. After all, there are a lot of people out there who are proud to show off their pet.

Even with their ability to take good care of themselves, most cat owners do not know how important it is to have a routine check-up with a veterinarian. In some cases, their owners do not realize that cats are prone to getting sick, too. The moment their cat gets sick, that's the time they recognize the reality that cats are sensitive creatures, and deserving of care. Before your cat gets terminally ill, here are some things you need to watch out for:

First and foremost, take time in getting to know your pet. This can be done by observing your cat daily. Aside from that, take the opportunity to familiarize the wants of your cat during petting sessions. This is a good time to become familiar with the physical aspects of your pet. By doing so, you will have a baseline on what to consider normal, and in the long run, you have something to compare to.

Observe the eating habits. Determine the cat's preferences during meals, the duration and how much food he can eat. Loss of appetite, once apparent, can mean there's something wrong.

Discern the elimination habits. Be familiar with the elimination habits of your cat. Get to know the normal color, consistency, and odor of the feces. Better yet, get some references about cats. Determine the normal from the abnormal urine and feces. Signs of constipation, diarrhea, and straining would mean a visit to the vet is needed.

Familiarize yourself with the normal gait of your cat. If there are an changes in the style of how they stride, this could be a red flag signifying an injury or other disease. In such cases, visit your vet right away.

Get acquainted with the normal activity of your cat. Get to know how energetic he is during the day, and during the night. It is normal to notice a little less energy as he ages, but even an older cat can still be entertained by a squeaky toy. If there are apparent sudden changes in the activity and energy of your cat, then you might want to check in with the vet.

Having a pet is much like sharing a part of you to your beloved pet. So, if there are any sudden unnecessary changes in the behavior of your pet, or if you are having doubts with regards to the health of your pet, then you might want to visit the veterinarian without delay.
