Feline Nutrition: What to Give, What Not to Give

Having the right diet is paramount to any living creature. Specifically for cats, there are several guidelines to be followed to provide what is best for your cat and nothing of what may be harmful to it.

Include proteins. Protein in considerable levels can be found on different food items. Specifically for cats, they will need animal-based proteins. This is because they will only be able to benefit a small amount in the intake of plant-based protein. So, it is better that you keep them in a diet with proteins from animals.

Just like in humans, proteins for cats serve to develop the muscles. It is also helpful in the repair of muscles when there are injuries, both minor and major.

Most recommend that you stay away from dry food for your cats. This can be because dry foods undergo high temperatures during processing. This will deplete the food of most of its nutritional values.

Control on carbohydrates. It is ideal that your cat receive carbohydrates. It will be important for energy as well as provision of warmth. However, you need to keep the carbohydrates in the diet at a small level. The ideal amount is about 3-5% in every meal that your cat will take.

This percentage is patterned with most canned foods that are best for your cat. So, if you want to stay away from the trouble of having to compute what your cat needs to eat, you can easily feed them the most nutritious canned foods you can find for them.

This is even if dry foods are generally more convenient to serve and less expensive than canned cat food. As long as you can make sure that the carbohydrates in the dry meal that you are feeding your cat is maintained at ideal amounts, you can surely feed your cat dry items.

Do include water. Water is still part of your cat's diet and health. Especially in the summer months or anytime that the weather is hot and humid, it is essential that you fill your cat's water containers with water.

Also take into account the amount of water that your pet will get from the food that it eats. Although it is unlikely that there will be an overload in the water that your cat takes in, it is still good that you keep it at ideal levels.

If you are feeding them dry food items, it is more important that you look into their water intake.

Read the label. Cat food is just like human food. To be sure that it is safe, you need to know what is in it. This can be answered by making it a point to read cat food labels.

The first thing that you will be looking into is its composition. This is with regards the amount of proteins, fat, and carbohydrates in the package.

Then, you also need to check the ingredients. See if there are grains included. Take note that grains provide carbohydrates. And, as much as possible, avoid by-products in your cat's diet.
