Why Most Food For People Are Unsafe For Dogs?

When it comes to matter of health and welfare of your dog, one aspect that you should really put some extra attention is the matter of what kind of foods are you giving to your pet. As a dog owner, it is your utmost responsibility to make sure that what you are feeding your dog is not only good for his health but it should also be safe as well. You have to keep in mind that while it is acceptable to feed dogs with what humans consume, not all of them are safe, some foods could even yield lethal consequences. Here are a list of foods that are considered to be unsafe for your dog to consume. Never ever feed these foods to your dog:

1. Alcohol. The most common side effect of alcohol is intoxication but it may lead to a much more lethal scenario like coma or death. Alcohol may also cause excessive panting, increased heart rate, high fever, seizures and at the worst case scenario, death.

2. Bones from chicken or fish. Once ingested, bones can cause internal injuries in the digestive system because of laceration. Expensive surgery is the only known treatment.

3. Cat Food. It is not necessarily poisonous but cat food has increased amount of fat and protein that may eventually lead to obesity if the feeding continues.

4. Chocolates. A very lethal poison when ingested by dogs but surprisingly many people are still unaware of this. The culprit is the chemical called theobromine, which is difficult for dogs to metabolize. And due to this, theobromine can remain in the dog's blood stream and may result to symptoms such as increased heart rate, hallucinations, diarrhea, seizures, heart failure, internal bleeding and will lead to the dog's eventual death.

5. Onions. Onions contains an ingredient called Thiosulphate which is toxic for dogs. Garlic also have this toxin, but only in small amounts so it takes many to consume before it becomes lethal. Thiosulphate can cause damage to the red blood cells that may lead to anemia.

6. Raisins and Grapes . The toxin that is found in grapes that are lethal to dogs, still remains a mystery. Ingestion of grapes and raisins may cause kidney failure.

7. Macadamia Nuts. Similar to grapes, the toxins that are responsible for making this food lethal to dogs still remains unknown. These toxins can affect the muscles and may cause problems to the digestive and nervous system.

8. Raw Fish. Consuming raw fish can result to thiamine deficiency. Deficiency in thiamine may affect your dog's appetite, cause seizures and it may also lead to death.

9. Raw Eggs. It is not actually lethal but it can affect your pet by making it difficult to absorb a B vitamin called biotin. Lack of biotin may result to skin and coat conditions.

As you can see, there are many foods that are common commodity for humans which are lethal to dogs. As a general rule, avoid feeding your dog with table scraps. Not only does it encourage begging but you may accidentally feed your dog with bad food.
