Fun Things to Do Outdoors With Your Dog

Hiking is a great activity for you and your dog. It doesn't have to be a trek into the mountains or the desert. A simple hike on a nature trail will provide good exercise for both of you. Proper clothing and supplies are a must. There are saddlebag garments for dogs that can hold all of their own equipment. You can put treats, leashes, water bowls and balls in the bag and keep your own hands free and your backpack lighter. Don't forget the doggie bags to pick up what they leave behind.

If you are traveling to new territory, a map is important. Your own backpack should have a map, compass, lunch, water and small camera to catch special moments. On remote trails your dog may decide that squirrel hunting is an additional benefit of a hike, so be prepared. Before you venture out into the wild, be sure your dog obeys simple commands such as come, stay, sit and down. It will be helpful when he gets rowdy.

If you're planning to turn your hike into an overnight camping trip, be sure to take along comfort items for your dogs. A blanket or easily foldable bed may be very important. There are doggie sleeping bags that fold up into a very compact package and are easy to transport. If you are camping at the end of your hike, being close to a body of water will add to the fun for your dog. It will provide a cooling dip for the dog and some fun when you play fetch with a stick out into the water.

The beach is another fun place to camp with your dog. Before you set up a campsite, be sure it is permitted on the beach you have chosen. Take along extra towels to dry off the sandy dog. Make sure you bring plenty of drinking water along as well. It won't take your dog long to figure out that there isn't any drinking water out there in the ocean. Don't forget the doggie bags.

Biking and rollerblading can also be done with your dog. Keep in mind that a Chihuahua probably won't keep up with you on a bike, but may enjoy a ride in a basket. Take time to get your dog accustomed to the trek. Don't go faster than your dog can run and don't prolong the trip beyond your pet's capability. Summer time is probably not a good time for a prolonged ride. If you do go out in summer time, take your ride early in the morning or after sun down to prevent overheating.

Enjoy the privilege of owning a very special pet. He will give you the unconditional love that makes a dog very special. It is a rewarding experience for you and for your dog to incorporate outdoor activities into your daily life. Remember to include all of the necessary supplies to make your adventure enjoyable and safe for both you and your four legged friend.
