What You Need to Know About Cat Carriers

For cat owners, carriers are famous during the times that they need to travel with their pet. If you are a cat owner who needs a carrier, there are a few things that you need to know about them before buying them and while using them.

It is important that your cat carrier is one wherein your cat is comfortable to be in. The size of the carrier will be important. Your pet has to be able to comfortably lie down and stand on the carrier. There should also be enough room to move and stretch. The surface should also be comfortable for your pet.

Travelling by plane might require that you place your cat on a hard kennel. But, for other modes of travel, it might be fine if you just have them in a soft, cardboard, or a wicker carrier.

If you expect to be travelling for several hours and you need to place your cat in a carrier, it might be helpful if you can prepare it before the long travel. At least a few days before travelling, you can make them stay in the carrier for a few minutes. Try to make them feel at ease while in it. This is so that they will not be too frightened when you have to keep the carrier for several hours.

When the one that you have is a hard carrier, you can line the surface with a mat or a paper lining. This will provide comfort to your pet. And of course, it can help make cleaning the mess a little easier. You may also add something that they can lie on like a cloth or thin foam.

You may want to consider spraying the carrier with a light scent so that the smell won't be too revolting. This is especially important if you are travelling with your cat on an enclosed space like on a car or a bus.

When you have to part from your cat, you will need to secure your name and contact information on the carrier or on your cat's collar.

Also make sure that the kennel is locked. Planes and other modes of transportation may see to this. But if you are travelling on your own car, it will be important that you secure the locks so that you won't be bothered while you are driving. It might be a risk to your driving if you suddenly found out that your cat got out of its carrier and it annoys you.

Feed your cat before the start of your travel. However, do not feed them too much. You wouldn't want to do the extra task of cleaning up after them. It is also helpful if you make them defecate before putting them inside the kennel.

And if you expect to be on your destination for a couple of hours, there might be no need for you to feed them. This is only applicable when you are travelling for at least half a day and you have access to them to feed them.
