How To Travel With Your Dogs

Travelling with a pet with you can pose a few troubles. First, you need to make sure that your pet does not misbehave. Also, you have to consider the safety of your pet. And lastly, both your comfort should also be priorities.

Seek your vet's advice. You might think that your dog doesn't have any problems. But, you can never be too sure. If you want your travel time to be as convenient as possible, you need to be prepared for any medical emergency. Take time to visit your dog's veterinarian and ask what medications you can take with you. These medications can be ones that will temporarily treat the symptoms of your pet.

If your pet hasn't had its rabies vaccinations yet, you are required to make that visit to the doctor. Especially when you are to travel abroad, you will need the right documentation that states that your dog has been fully immunized. You might also need certification from the vet that your dog is well and healthy enough to travel.

Protect your dog. One way to do this is by making sure that you make your dog wear an identifying tag. A collar complete with the necessary information will be essential. In the tag, you will be placing your home address as well as your contact number.

Better yet, consider implanting microchips in your dog for easier tracking when an unfortunate event happens and you lose your dog. Take note of this task when you are planning to make that visit to your vet.

For you, make sure that you have pictures of your dog. These will be essential as pictures might be one of your best tools when you are going to search for it.

Bring familiar items. This will be applicable to things that your dog usually uses when in your home. Bring with you its favorite toy, a blanket, and its own food bowl or water container. And of course, it will be wiser if you will bring with you the brand of dog food that your pet is used to eating.

Sometimes, it will spare you the difficulty of dealing with diarrhea in your dog if you will bring drinking water from home. A few gallons might be enough for a few days of being away from home. If you are staying away for a longer period, just make sure that the change in drinking water is not abrupt. So before you run out of water that you brought, make sure that you alternate with water from a local source.

Make sure you have restraints or carriers. When in your car, the only way that you can make sure that your dog stays where it is and does not interfere with your driving is when you have it restrained in its seat or when you keep it locked in its carrier.

Restraints are usually harnesses that can be attached to the seat belt. This is good for big dogs that are trained to stay still. For smaller and more restless dogs, carriers will be best to have.
