This is very important because this means preventing your pet to suffer from any infections caused by a dirty shelter. Before you put anything inside it, make sure that it is already clean and disinfected. Better yet, you can consider repainting it after cleaning. When the cage is ready for use, that's the time when you can place the food/water containers, toys, unused clothes and other stuffs that should be in a hutch. And of course, you have to make sure that you are going to place the cage in the most appropriate place possible. You can place it in an area inside your house, at your backyard/garden or anywhere provided that your pet is safe from harm.

With all these things, you will surely be able to provide a good shelter for your pet even if you are on a tight budget or if you want to cut back on your expenses. Reusing an old cage is definitely a great idea that you should look into because as long as the cage is comfortable and cozy, your pet would not mind if it is new or not.
