Basics in Caring For Pet Rabbit

Having rabbits as pets is fun and exciting, but it also entails huge responsibility on your part as a pet owner. Like any other pets you have at home, they also need the care, attention and love from you. Apart from giving them quality and safe shelter, it is suggested that you provide them time and attention to get their confidence.

Raising rabbits need lots of patience and work because they are somewhat aloof at first compared to other pets you have at home such as cats, dogs or birds. They tend to get scared easily, especially if they are not used to their new homes. To get their trust and confidence, you need to give them gentle handling, especially during the first weeks of their stay in your home. Once you get their trust, they will respond to their names when called and they will become more active and playful.

If you plan to have rabbits as pets at home, be sure to keep things quiet as much as possible because they are skittish about change, especially in their new environment. You should be cautious on your moves because every noise that they hear will become a source of fear for them. In the first few days of having them at home, avoid touching them, but you can sit on the floor and let them approach you. Remember that they are still in the process of adapting to their new environment. Thus do not hasten the process as they will become afraid and aloof. Avoid introducing other pets right away to give them more time to adapt to their new home. Be sure to give them enough time to adapt to these changes.

Once you notice you have gained the trust of your new rabbit, you can pick it up and hold its paws close to its body while you are holding your pet close to you. In this way, you can prevent it from scratching you with its back paws. By holding them often, you can get their confidence and you can begin training them for grooming. Be sure to hold them for several minutes everyday so you can establish bond with them.

You can either keep your rabbits inside their hutches or keep them outside. If you opt to let them free to roam around in your yard, be sure to have a fence to avoid the entry of predators. You should also be vigilant enough as rabbits tend to dig under the soil to get out of the fence. To keep them safe from predators and other forms of harm, it is best to keep them inside their hutches.

Be sure to provide them quality and nutritious foods to ensure they are healthy always. It is also suggested to bring them to your veterinarian for regular check ups. Ask advice from your vet on the choices of healthy foods that you can give to your pet. You can also avail the different immunizations or vaccinations to make sure they are healthy always.

The suggestions and tips mentioned above are some basics on how to care for pet rabbits.
