Treating Fleas the Safe Way

Fleas are one of a dog's and their owners' worst nightmare. They are the vampires of the insect world, biting and feeding on the blood of your dog. Not only are they are pest that is hard to get rid of it, there is also still a stigma attached to having fleas.

Fleas cause many problems. They can cause severe skin rashes, allergic reactions, anaemia and, in rare cases, even death. They are one of the more difficult pests to get rid of for a number of reasons; they are prolific breeders and their eggs can stay dormant for many months, not hatching until the conditions are right. Even if you think you may have got rid of them the chances are you haven't. Also, they are very quick and not easy to destroy.

There are several things you can do to keep fleas away from your dog and home. Firstly you should use a flea comb on your dog daily. Have a cup of warm soapy water with you and, as you find a flea drop it into the water, making sure it is pushed to the bottom of the cup.

Another method is to bathe your dog regularly using a shampoo containing natural, safe ingredients. There are hundreds of flea shampoos on the market but many of them contain chemicals which are dangerous to your dog's health. Using natural organic ingredients is the only way to safely rid your dog of fleas.

A natural shampoo should contain a combination of natural oils. Cedar wood, rosemary, peppermint, clove, cinnamon and lavender are all excellent oils as they are natural flea repellents. Citrus oils are also one of the best ingredients; whilst this alone will not kill a flea it will certainly make it think twice about setting up home on your dog.

A shampoo containing a combination of the above oils and natural chemical oils will kill any flea on contact and will also act as a preventative against future infestations. To use a natural shampoo you should first wet your dog thoroughly with warm water. Massage the shampoo thoroughly into your dog, starting at his tail and working your way up to his head.

This is important as it has the effect of moving fleas up the body to the head where they can easily be seen. Those that are not killed on contact with the shampoo can be caught and killed separately. Make sure to leave the shampoo on for at least 5 minutes. This is to allow it time to sink in and do its work properly. Rinse off with warm water ensuring all traces of shampoo are removed. This can be repeated 2 or 3 times a week.

The oils that are in a good natural dog flea shampoo are gentle enough not to irritate your dog and will also help to soothe any irritations already caused by the fleas. This will help his skin to heal much quicker and stop any further infections or skin lesions appearing. Combine this treatment with a flea comb and treatment of your home to ensure that the fleas do not return.
