Learning All About Puppy Training

Your kids have finally worn you down. After months and months of asking, wishing, hoping and nagging, you finally broke down, went to a breeder and picked out a puppy for your home. Now that you have him home, do you know what to do with him? It is not just the basics of caring for his needs that you must learn and get into the routine of performing. If you want the entire family to have a great relationship with your new pet, there is going to need to be some training involved. Figuring out where to start is the best place to begin when learning all about puppy training.

Really, the best place to start with training is as soon as you get your puppy home. You want to start basic instructions as soon as you can. Many dogs are more apt to have commands stick with them if they learn them right from the start. It is important for you and everyone in the family to start with the training as soon as you can. Puppies that fall into bad behavior and are not trained can be very stubborn and this makes breaking the bad behaviors difficult.

Reinforcement and repetition are big keys to successful training. You may hear yourself repeating the same commands over and over again many times a day at first, but there is nothing wrong with that. It is through this repetition that your puppy learns what is to be expected of him. It is not so much the words that he will be learning but what the behavior is that is expected of him as a result of these words that he will learn.

One of the things that needs to be reinforced from very early on is taking your puppy outside for frequent potty breaks. At this age, your puppy will need to go out frequently, maybe as often as every two hours after naps or feeding time. This not only will help prevent accidents on the floors, but will help to establish a routine for your puppy that he will follow later on in life.

Socialization is very important from early on. Your puppy needs to get out be exposed to other people, other noises and other pets so they can learn some basic behavior around others and explore the world. Try not to make this a high pressure event so the puppy feels stressed. Make it a fun day so they can enjoy the experience and learn from it at the same time.

Make sure you give constant praise for good behavior. Your puppy needs to hear how wonderful he is when he does something correctly. This will not only make him happy but more likely to repeat the good behavior because he sees there is a reward to it.

Puppy training does not have to be a frustrating experience. Granted, there are likely to be times when you feel frustrated that the dog is not listening, but this happens to everyone. Persevere and push through it and you will be rewarded with a wonderful pet.
