     Years ago, the thought of dressing a dog or cat in a shirt or dress made most pet owners laugh or even cringe. The only time you would see a posh puppy or fashionable feline would be on television, in magazines, or when the rich old lady from down the street would pass by with her tiny toy breed snuggly riding in her oversized purse. People who would dress their pets in dog clothes or cat clothes would receive strange looks and possibly become the butt of several jokes. Society seemed to reserve the right to outfit a dog or cat in any pet apparel, costume or eye catching accessory for the rich and famous, the eccentric, or the folks that were just plain nuts. The times have changed and society seems to have completely changed its mind about what is acceptable when it comes to dog clothes or sparkly cat collars being displayed on the pets of common folk.

Today, you will not only see a large variety of pet clothes and pet accessories being produced, but you will also see them being worn by dogs and cats all over the world. Yes, the rich and famous still have their pets dressed in pet apparel, but have you noticed the change that has taken place concerning the overall fashion of that pet apparel? The days of ugly dog sweaters with orange and brown stripes looking like they were constructed from an oversized sock are long gone. The pet clothing industry has gained the attention of thousands of talented clothing designers worldwide. From the basic shirt or jacket design to the most luxurious and unique costumes, designers are now dressing our pets with clothes for dogs and clothes for cats that use the same materials and designs seen on some of the best dressed and more popular humans.

Could it be that our love and appreciation for pets has grown to the point of making them look as human as possible and outfitting them in the latest pet apparel and accessories is a way of making them seem like part of the family even more than before? Isn’t it true that most pet owners, whether they believe in dog clothes or cute dog costumes or not, will say that they consider their dog or cat to be a part of the family? More and more people are putting pet clothes on their pets. Perhaps the reason for all the cute dog clothes and pet apparel has something to do with how much we interact with our pets on a daily basis that resembles the same interaction we have with children. Some pet owners even refer to the family dog or cat as their children.
