The different methods of Dog Obedience Training

Most of us love to have pets and when it comes to pets, many prefer to have dogs as pets. The reason of preferring dogs over other animals as pets is that the dogs are man's best friends. Dogs, like our own children must be given utmost care and must be taught some discipline. Which dog owner won't feel proud of his disciplined dog? Conversely, who won't feel ashamed of an unruly dog? It is very important for any pet dog to be absolutely obedient to commands of its owner. For this it is essential for the pet owner to find experts who are well versed with the dog obedience training.

Most people just don't know this but one of the reasons why dogs behave inappropriately is because they don't have the right direction to guide their actions and that they are confused on how to respond appropriately with the environmental and social variables that they encounter.

Though there are many approaches to Dog obedience training, however two of the most popular approaches which are followed by most of the trainers are - the carrot and the stick methods.

The Stick also known as the Leash and collar method, as the name suggests depends heavily on the stick or punishment approach. This is considered to be a primitive method no doubt, but it has withstood the barriers of time. This method of Dog obedience training works best for working dogs such as police dogs, rescue dogs, sniffer dogs etc.

The Carrot method also known as positive reinforcement deals with planning out a reward system for the dog. This system of Dog obedience training doesn't believe in punishing the dog and follows a psychological approach to train the dog. In the Carrot method, the dog is made to know the good parts of behavior and rewarded for the same and the ugly behavior is neglected.

Dogs, like our own kids, get easily confused when double standards are used. As such, whatever technique is used for dog obedience training, it is important to know that the training must be consistent. If you expect your dog never to jump on the bed, never let or invite him on the bed.

The actual training of the dog can be done by anyone, the trainer, owner, or a friend. Typically the individual who is caring for and living with the dog participates and trains the dog, as they will be the one who will be giving the commands.
