The English bulldog is a symbol of a breed of a dogged nature, resilient and persistent and never giving up. These small but very strong dogs were used in the very popular sport of Bull baiting where the dogs, on which money was wagered was thrown into a ring with a bull and if it could avoid being hurt or killed manager to get the bull by the nose and pull it to the ground thus completing the wager and the successful dogs earned their masters a great deal of money.

Obviously the dogs that were used for this had to have a number of characteristics. They needed to be strong, agile, fast resilient and have a very strong bite. And most importantly they had to have a lot of courage. These characteristics became associated with Britishness in their many and persistent victories over various attempts at subjugation by foreign powers. Not since 1066 has their been a successful armed invasion of those small islands off the French and Dutch coast.

When Bull and bear baiting was outlawed in 1865 a dog with these fantastic survival traits of stocky bodies and big heads with very strong jaws had been developed. But what was interesting was the other characteristics that developed with the breed.

First and foremost they have wonderful temperaments as pets. They are not at all vicious or aggressive but rather loving and gentle natured. They do not need massive amounts of exercise and are content to sleep a lot of the time. This makes them ideal pets for those living in apartment buildings and those who like a cuddly pet that is docile rather than boisterous.

In addition they are not large dogs. The average male gets to a bit more than 45 pounds and the females are generally about that when they have matured.
