Puberty This is the stage at which the animal, dog or bitch, becomes able to reproduce. This usually occurs at an average age of twelve months, although it can be as early as eight months or as late as eighteen to twenty-four months.

Tied occurs during mating and often called the "mating lock'. It lasts from anything up to thirty minutes after coitus and is painful for the male if the dog and bitch are separated forcibly. The tie is merely successful mating, and is usually insisted upon by professional breeders.
