There's a big advantage that having a pet at home can give us aside from the companionship and fun moments with them. Believe it or not, there are actually health benefits that we can gain if we have pets in our house. Sounds silly, right? Some would even contend that having a pet at home can even add to the health risks we face on a day-to-day basis. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

Research has shown that living with pets can actually provide certain health benefits. What are these benefits? Read on to find out.

Fighting allergies - This sounds almost counterintuitive, because our thinking is it's the other way around, that we develop allergies when pets are around. There are a growing number of studies, though, which suggest that children growing up in a house with furred animals, like a cat or a dog, will actually have less risk of developing allergies and asthma. If a dog lives with a family, according to the studies, infants didn't have a high chance of showing evidence of pet allergies.

Good for the aged - Pets, particularly dogs, are good for the elderly. There are studies that have shown that those who suffer from Alzheimer's have fewer outbursts of anxiety when there's an animal with them at home. Those who professionally care for them, namely, caregivers, also feel they have a lighter burden when there's a pet around. This is apart from the fact that walking a dog can provide an exercise platform and, of course, that much-needed companionship.

They're good for the mind and soul, too - Having pets around doesn't just provide physical health benefits. They also play an important role in improving our psychological and emotional well-being. For example, those who suffer from AIDS and have pets are less likely to succumb to depression than those without pets. There was also a study that showed that stockbrokers with high blood pressure eventually had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations after they had adopted a dog or a cat as their pet.

Heart-friendly - Yes, having pets at home can be good for the heart, too. Several studies have shown that those who have suffered from heart attack that own pets survive longer than those who don't. According to the same study, male pet owners have fewer signs of heart disease; these signs are lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels.

Attracting people and getting a date - Dogs - well, even cats are excellent 'tools' in getting a date. You don't have to get on dating sites to find love. Having a dog can easily start conversations, especially those who want to chat with someone from the opposite sex. Of course, it's not all about eventually getting a date. It's good for social interactions in general, which of course can be beneficial health-wise.

As you can see, there are also health benefits that people can gain from having a pet or two (or more) at home. It's your responsibility as their owner to provide them with TLC by giving them their needs, from nutrient-rich food to dietary supplements to grooming products.
