Myth: Something is Wrong With Them as They Are in a Shelter

However, at some shelters, you may get some information regarding the dog's history but you shouldn't cling to it.

Myth: They Are Unhealthy

Reality: They may and kennel cough which is a very common disease. But many rescue shelters will provide subsidized or free vet-visit vouchers to you. Many vaccines and shots are already administered and they also make sure that the animals are flea-free.

Myth: I will Not Find what I am Looking For in a Shelter

Reality: You can find all kinds of animals at a shelter from puppies, kittens, purebreds, rabbits, adult animals to exotic animals. In fact, you can visit their website to get a better idea of the variety of pets they have. This will go a long way in saving your time and energy if you are looking for a certain kind of breed or distinct characteristics. Also, do not just blindly assume that all the shelter animals are mixed breeds. Various studies point out that between 15-25 percent of animals in shelters are purebreds which were given up by their owners.

Myth: Shelter Pets Have Too Much Baggage

Reality: Accepted that these pets do have histories but this can actually be an advantage for you. Maybe their personalities are different and just waiting to fit into your home and lifestyle. If you think about it, pet adoption from shelters can be an advantage.
