29 11:20:11
With over hundreds of dog breeds, how do you decide the ideal companion for your family? Though it is fun to watch Lassie and the Lady and the Tramp, they probably wouldn't make ideal family dogs. So how do you decide which dog to choose? The rule of the thumb is to consider the breed's temperament, energy level, disposition and size, all of which should complement the lifestyle of your family. Always meet the dog and get to know him through the breeder or shelter worker. Ask questions that will help you determine the ideal do for your family. But to narrow the search, here is a list of top 10 family-friendly dogs.

1. Bulldog

Bulldogs are sturdy dogs and will take just about anything your kids throw at them. These dogs are not very energetic and that takes care of all the running and romping the house. These dogs can put up with a lot and certainly are not whiny about where you put them. As a result, they are suited for both large houses and small apartments.

2. Beagle

Beagles are sturdy, never tire and always ready to play and fit well in homes with kids. Docile, friendly and cheerful, they get along well with other pets too. They are high-maintenance dogs though.

3. Bull Terrier

Intelligent, energetic and friendly dogs, bull terriers can deal with roughhousing without losing it. They are not just cute and adorable; their energy levels will keep your kids occupied.

4. Collie

Highly trainable and friendly dogs! Collies are good for families with younger children. They love nothing more than to keep their humans happy and you could train them for just about anything.

5. Newfoundland

They are also known as "Nature's nannies" because of their love for children. These are large and affectionate dogs and love their humans. However, these dogs tend to shed and drool and are suited more for larger and open houses. But they would prefer to be wherever their family is.

6. Vizsla

The Vizsla is little known outside Hungary, and is basically a hunting dog. But this gentle, quiet, loyal and affectionate dog is ideal for families with active children. Vizsla loves spending time indoors and is an eager learner and equally eager to show it off.

7. Irish Setter

Irish Setters are playful and energetic and suited more for families with large yards and active children because of their energy levels.

8. Poodle

The standard Poodle makes good family-friendly dogs. The miniature ones tend to be very high-strung and full of themselves. Standard poodles are good-natured and make good playmates for kids.

9. Labrador Retriever

Labradors are one of the most popular breeds around the world. Labs are playful, protective, loving and reliable. These little canines are eager to show off any trick you may teach them.

10. Golden Retriever

Goldens are pretty much same as Labs except they have a rather shorter life span. Goldens are extremely patient dogs and their high-energy levels make them ideal for children.
