One important thing to keep in mind when leash training your dog is that walking on a leash is not natural for a dog and it's something that they need to be accustomed to. You need to introduce the leash to your new puppy in a slow and conscientious fashion. Here are tips to dog leash training.

Where to Begin:
Start with a 6 ft. leash and a comfortable collar If your dog tends to be a puller, your dog may be able to slip out of a flat buckle color. So make sure you have a good strong collar that your dog won't be able to slip out of. Don't forget to have some treats nearby for positive reinforcements.

Teaching a Cue Command
Teach your dog a cue word command to let your dog know to follow you. A good command may be "come on" or "let's go". Begin walking with your dog right next to you and give the command, and then start walking. Do this several times

Training with Stop and Go
When ever your dog pulls on the leash, immediately stop and wait for your dog to calm down. When he does eventually calm down, then you can start moving. This will take several practices and your dog will learn to associate bad behavior with no walks when he is tugging and pulling on the leash.

Don't forget the Rewards:
Your dog will be easily distracted once you step out of the house. You will have to work hard to keep his attention. You can do this by making it rewarding by being next to yo. Use treats, praises and loving tones to keep his attention. When ever your dog gives you attention, reward him with a praise or treat.

Clicker training is a great way to keep your dog's attention on you.

It won't be easy at first but with plenty of practice and positive reinforcements you will be able to keep your dog's attention on you for a good period of time.

Make sure you give your dog enough slack when walking on the leash. When your dog finally get the connection of positive results when he is behaving, you can phase out treats.

There will be several times when it seems impossible to keep your dog's attention focused on you. When this happens, switch the direction you are going in. Your dog will have no choice but to follow you and will soon learn that if he wants to go in one direction, he will need to behave.

With time, consistency and practice, training your dog to behave on the leash will take no time. Remember, if you don't address this issue at a young age, your dog will never learn how to behave properly on a leash. It will be harder to train an older and full grown dog to behave well while being walked on a leash.
