The Reality about Starfish or Sea Stars

Sea stars are also called as star fish, but this name is not correct because Sea stars are not fishes. Sea stars are very beautiful sea animals; it can be different types of colors, Shapes and sizes. Some sea stars looks like very smooth, they all have spine covering their outside and a soft inside. If you turn it softly, you will see its tube feet wiggling back at you. Sea stars are found Class Asteroidea in the Phylum Echinodermata. The Brittle stars are sometimes called as Sea stars, and they belong to the Class Ophiuroidea in the Phylum Echinodermata.

Fact1:

Sea stars live deep sea water and are sometimes called "starfish," remember sea stars are not fish. They don’t have any gills, scales, or fins same as fish do and sea stars move quite in a different way from fish. Using their own tails fish push themselves, Sea stars have tiny tube feet to assist them move along.

Fact2:

Sea stars fit in to the Phylum Echinodermata. Echinodermata means they are related to real animals like sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. All Echinoderms have five-point radial balance, it means body plan has five sections are arranged on a central disk.

There are about 1,800 known living species of Sea stars or Starfish. The most variety of starfish is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific. Some sea stars live in intertidal zone, and some live in deep sea water and some live in tropical areas and some live in cold water.

We are all known Most of sea stars have five armed varieties; not at all sea stars have only 5 arms. Some Star fishes have many more arms. Take one example of Star fish namely Sun star which has up to 40 arms.

Fact5:

Depending on their types, a sea star's skin may feel tough, or slightly spiky. Sea stars have a hard spines covering on their outside, which is made up of plates of calcium carbonate. A sea star's spines are used for defense from predators; predators include Sea birds, Sea fishes and sea otters.

Sea stars do not have blood in their body, instead of that they have a system of waster in their body pumped into them by the deep sea water.

Fact7:

Sea stars have tube feet located on their outside which is used to move from one place to another place. The tube feet are filled with marine water. Sea stars move speedier and quickly than you might be expecting. If u gets a free time to visiting a pool or fish aquarium and then you take a moment to watch a star fish moving around the water. Sea star’s tube feet which also help the sea fish hold its prey.
