Terrier Dogs: What You May Not Know About Them

Before picking a dog for you and your family, you must first be oriented with the different kinds of dog breeds, their nature, needs and other important information that will be useful in dealing with them. You have to put in consideration the space, food, and grooming that they will require. You also have to take into account the ages of the children who will be living together with them.

Some dogs are not ideal with little children because they might be too small enough to be hurt by playing kids or they might be too big enough to knock children out as they play with each other. If you are going to put the dog in the confines of your house or apartment with little space, you might want to choose small dog breeds, but it would be alright to pick large ones when you have enough space. There are also dog breeds which are ideal for show and there are those that can be good watchdogs.

One type of dog that can be very protective towards its owners is the terrier. In history, terrier dogs were once used to go after rodents and even dangerous animals such as foxes to protect farms and farm animals. Terrier dogs are brave and determined protectors. Even the small terrier dogs are known to be very eager protectors and have known to be more violent and fierce than the larger ones. Although terriers are not originally domestic dogs, they can be very affectionate and playful to their owners and to children as well. With proper care and enough affection, they can live up to around 14 years.

One common misconception with terriers is that they can be very violent and may end up hurting their owners and children. When cross breeding came into the picture, people now have this perception that terriers have a bad reputation, rather than thinking that these dogs can be very warm, friendly and affectionate. With cross breeding, some terriers have become more aggressive. This resulted to instances where little children ended up being bitten by these dogs. Others are intimidated by their energetic and feisty nature and their size.

When you are planning to make terrier dogs as pets, you have to keep in mind that they should be given proper training and attention so that they do not turn aggressive. They should be showered with love, care and attention so they do not feel neglected. Giving them what they need would make them feel stability, and serenity.
