Jack Russell dogs are friendly dogs and are known to mingle with children easily. However, they are more than just household pets most children love to cuddle and play with. They are working terriers and have origins in fox hunting.

Aside from being friendly, Jack Russell dogs are very intelligent and highly energetic dogs. These two attributes are very important to make one an ideal working dog. Another important attribute a Jack Russell possesses is the size of its chest. It has small chest which is ideal when entering and working in burrows.

As working dog, its forelegs need to be strong and straight boned with joints in correct alignment. However, these dogs are also known to have crooked or benched legs. This fault, expert says, is often a sign of Achondroplasia. So watch out for this disease when you own a Jack Russell Terrier. Its hindquarters should also be very strong and muscular and should have totally balanced proportions. A Jack Russell works by barking at the prey so that the dog can be located underground. They are used to locate the den, set or living space of the prey. The Jack Russell will dig if necessary, so that is what there small chest and strong legs are for. Then he will bolt, capture or kill the prey through force.

In order to maintain your working dog's capability to work and hunt, his health care should not be taken for granted. High quality dog foods should be invested in his stomach and body. Make sure he gets every essential element he needed to nourish his working body. One most important thing to remember is to feed him before taking him in the field. Letting him go out into the field without having breakfast is dangerous because his sugar level may drop and may lead to hypoglecemia. It is equally important to make sure that your dog is fit before taking him out and has his dose of vaccines to prevent him from being infected with various diseases. Once the hunting is over, flush your dog's eyes with sterile water and check for pieces of grit in his eyes.

Being prepared is always important. Before heading off in the field, make sure that your hunting pack is complete. This pack must include a knife, limb saw, flash light, tea bags, post hole diggers, large and small shovels, a metal bar, towels and blankets to wrap your terrier in, fresh water and extra batteries for collars and box. Some thinks that these things are unnecessary since you won't be using all these. But, a lot of things can happen during the hunting process and it pays if you're prepared to face anything that may come along the way.

Jack Russell dogs are ideal working dogs but they still need you to perform well. So the work is not just for your dog alone, the work is best shared with your care and your Jack Russell.
