Walking a giant size dog such as a Great Dane can be fun! The sight will definitely draw attention from people coming and going. Moments like this create happy memories that will surely last a lifetime. But wait! Do you know how to walk your Great Dane properly? Your supposed to be happy moment while walking your dog may turn into a disaster for both of you if proper walking a dog is not applied.

A dog is a walker and traveler by instinct. Meaning , all dogs, regardless of the size, breed, age and sex, need to be taken for a walk. However, the span of time and frequency vary per breed and individual dog. Though large, a Great Dane is not as highly energetic as other breeds thus a half an hour walk in addition to some run few times a week is enough to stay fit. Every owner should ensure that this few-times-a-week walk is done properly to prevent accidents and other problems.

There are dog training classes available at affordable price. But if attending classes is not possible, you may want to opt for home training your dog. Just remember to start the training when the dog is a puppy and continue until he can be trusted off leash. You can find helpful dog training tips on the web, some good books about dog training or advice from dog trainers or veterinarian.

When walking your dog, stick to the rule that the dog must walk either beside you or behind you, never in front of you. In a dog's mind, the leader goes first and this means a lot to a dog. This will make him realize that you are the leader, you are the one deciding when to leave and where to go. Do not let your dog walk you or else he will think that he is the leader of the pack and you must do and give him what he wants.

Consider these things when walking a dog:

- Ensure that your dog has name tags or collars with your dog's name, your name and contact number or other important information in case your dog get lost.

- If your dog is a puller, consider using a collar to increase your control and comfort. However, others opt for harness or retractable leashes.

- Carry water for you and your dog to keep you hydrated especially on long walks or during summer.

- Despite your best effort to housetrain your dog, accidents do happen so it is best to carry a pooper scooper. You can use a plastic bag as a substitute for the tool if you do not have one.

Regular walking is important for you and your dog to release mental and physical energy. It is also a great time for you and your dog to bond and meet new friends.
