Another dog breed gained the spotlight once again - the portuguese water dog. After it was officially announced that the portuguese water dog joined the first family, searches about this breed suddenly increase. Many people around the world wants to take a quick peek on the information regarding the portuguese water dog.

New owners, just like the Obama family, need guidance so as to properly care for this breed. Portuguese water dogs have noticeable thick coat that could either be curly or wavy. They are known to be non-shedding dogs thus often referred by others as hypoallergenic dogs (although experts believe that there is no such thing as hypoallergenic dog). Despite of their thick coat that grows on and on just like human hair does, porties are not hard to groom neither need frequent trimming or clipping. And just like human hair, their coat needs to be brushed daily to prevent tangles and mats. Frequent bathing is not necessary and should be done only when your pet smells dirty and looks dirty. A visit to the groomer every four to six weeks would be enough.

The coat is not the only thing that needs attention. Often overlooked, but also important are nail and ear care. Regular ear care makes way for the immediate diagnosis should ear infections or allergies develop. A foul smell may indicate bacterial infection or allergies so watch out for it. A dog's nail must be clipped every three to four weeks to prevent extended growth that could possibly lead to painful ingrown nails.

Though they are water-loving dogs, porties do not need to be in the water all the time. They will do good in apartments as long as sufficient exercise is provided. Being such an active dog with great working stamina, physical and mental exercises are very important. If you are planning to have a portie or you already have one, know that daily walk or jog is a great way to keep this breed physically and mentally healthy. And since they are a water-loving dogs, swimming and playing in the water is a total fun for them.
