Fish tank care to the beginnerd can seem like a lot of hard work but in actual fact, as long as you have a routine and stick to it then it takes very little of your time in return for the vast amount of pleasure that owning a well set up aquarium can give. If you break the tasks down into daily, weekly and monthly tasks the tank care is soon split up into bite sized chunks that are easily managed.
?
On a daily basis it is as much about observation as anything else. Make sure that your thermometer is where you can see it easily and simply check that there have been no huge fluctuations in temperature. When you feed the fish check them out for any signs of distress or illness. Do a quick headcount to make sure that they are all alive and well.
?
Set by some time each week to carry out your weekly maintenance routine. You need to do a bit of preparation as this is the time when you will clean the tank and carry out any partial water changes. Prepare the replacement water in advance (10-25%) and then siphon off the amount that you are intending to change. Use the siphoning to clean up the gravel with your gravel vacuum. Clean the glass removing any algae, check out the plants removing any dead or dying leaves as these will only add to pollution. If any plants have come adrift simply reattach them where they should be.
?
On a monthly basis you need to do the behind the scenes stuff like filter changes and testing the water for nitrates and nitrites. If you keep a log of any water testing and filter changes it will help to manage the water quality in the future.
?
Finally, remember to change the light bulbs every six months or so. They may ;look good to the naked eye but your plants will notice the difference as they age and start to suffer accordingly.
?
With a bit of planning fish tank care is an easy job and not at all daunting.
