Important Feeding Measures That Works Well for Pet Finches

In keeping finches for pet, most owners just feed their finches with seed mix bought from the pet store. Feeding finches with nutritious foods is one of the main obligations that come when you decided to keep finches for a pet.
Finches are mainly seed eaters, they would eat variety of fresh plant and grass seeds that are just ripening, which has more nutrients than that of the packaged dry seeds.

Feeding finches with nutritionally complete diet, giving them fresh water everyday and a safe cage or aviary are the basic things needed by finches that will keep them healthy and strong. Finches are mainly seed eaters and they eat almost any plant seeds most especially grass seeds. There is also some variety of finches that needs insects to be included in their diet. A balance and varied diet must be given at all times in feeding your finches.

What seeds do finches eat?
If it is your first time to keep finches, you will surely ask the pet shop owner, what do finches eat? And they would offer you bird seeds available in their stores. But, an all-seed diet is high in fats can cause an imbalance source of nutrients for your finches. You can try feeding your finches with seed mixes that contains 2 to 5 different kind of seeds and observe the type of seeds that your finch will select to eat. And from there you could give them a small amount of good quality seeds that your finch will surely eat when offered.

How much seeds do they eat?
Feeding finches with 1 to 2 teaspoons of seeds a day per bird in the basic guideline. Separate dishes should be provided with each bird inside the cage but feeding finches with seeds must only be a small part of their diet.

What other foods do finches eat?
Aside from seeds, you can feed your finches with formulated pellets, crumble and mashes to give them additional nutrients. Formulated mashes are generally best for finches because of their small size. It is advisable to make formulated foods that are available in most pet shop store a part of their daily diet, it will be easier to start the baby finches in a mash diet.

How to convert the Finches diet from seeds to formulated mash.
It is not easy to instantly convert the eating habit of your finches from seeds to formulated diet. Because finches are used to eating seeds, they may not see formulated mash or pellets as foods they can eat. You can start by giving small amount of seeds in one dish and a formulated mash on the other dish. Others also mix the formulated mash and seeds in one dish. Do not put out seeds immediately in their diet without being sure that your finches are already eating formulated foods.

How about fruits and vegetables?
20 to 25% of your finch diet must consist of fruits and vegetables. Thoroughly washed the fruits and vegetables to remove any traces of chemicals and shred or cut them to manageable pieces before putting them in a separate dish inside your finch cage. Never stop trying offering them variety of fruits and vegetables as they contain nutrients that your finches needs.

Other foods for your finches
Finches can also be fed with a little amount of meat, cheese and eggs. There are readily available egg-food mix in most pet store that is a good source of protein. Feeding finches with junk foods and any alcoholic drinks must not be given as this can be toxic for your finches.
